GAUGE: 16 sc = 4 inches (10 cm) BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you less stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
NOTES: To change colors within row, work to last st of old color, work last st until last 2 loops remain on hook, drop old color to WS; with new color, yo and draw through both loops on hook to complete st; continue with new color. For star rows, carry Royal Blue and Fisherman across field area only; work with Racing Red (or Fisherman) only on stripe area.

FLAG STRIP - make 3
With B, ch 40. Row 1 Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch across - 39 sc. Ch 1, turn. Row 2 Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. * Continuing in rows of sc, work until there are 4 rows of B, then work 5 rows A, 4 rows B, 5 rows A. Next row Work 24 sc with B; attach C and work remaining 15 sc (field area). Ch 1, turn. Next row Work 1 sc with C; join A; work (1 sc A, 1 sc C) 7 times; work 24 sc B. Repeat last 2 rows once more. Continuing C and A on 15 field sts as before, work 5 rows A over last B stripe, then 4 rows B. This completes one flag. Work 15 rows A for band. Repeat from * until 5th flag is completed. Fasten off. JOINING BANDS - make 2
With A, ch 12. Work in rows of 11 sc until same length as flag strips. Fasten off. With bands between flag strips, neatly sew bands to long edges of flag strips as shown to form center panel of throw. INNER BORDER Top and Bottom - make 2
With A, ch 9. work in rows of 8 sc until same length as across top or bottom of center panel. Fasten off. Sew in place. Sides - make 2
In same manner, make border to fit along each side edge of center panel, including ends of top and bottom borders. Sew in place. With A, crochet 1 round of sc around outer edge, working 3 sc in each corner. OUTER BORDER With C, crochet 7 rounds of sc around edge, working 3 sc at each corner on each round. Slip st in each sc around last round. Fasten off.
