Americana Hat & Scarf

Lion Brand® Homespun® - Wool-Ease®

GAUGE:

10 sts and 10 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in single crochet with K hook
10 sts and 6.5 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) in double crochet with K hook BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make a 4 in. [10 cm] square, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.

HAT & SCARF, ADULT VERSION

HAT

Center of crown With larger hook and A, ch 4 and join into ring with a slip st.
Rnd 1 Ch 1, 6 sc in ring. Slip st to beg-ch. (Mark for beg of rnd.)
Rnd 2 Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc, slip st to beg-ch - 12 sts.
Rnd 3 Join B with a slip st to top of beg-ch, ch 1, 1 sc in same st, 2 sc in next st *1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; rep from *, slip st to top of beg-ch - 18 sts.

Continue in this way, alternating B for 2 rnds, A for 2 rnds; inc every 3rd st on next rnd; inc every 4th st on the following rnd, etc. - inc 6 sts every rnd until there are 60 sts. Work even until crown measures approximately 6 inches from center (4th B stripe will be completed). Attach C with a slip st to beg and work even for 4 rnds more.

Brim: Inc Rnd (1 sc in each of next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 10 times - 70 sts.

Work even until brim measures 2¾ inches. Change to smaller hook and work 1 rnd rev sc (from LEFT to RIGHT). Fasten off.

SCARF

NOTE Scarf is worked in 2 sections.

Striped section With A, ch 147.
Row 1 (RS)
Dc into 3rd ch from hook and each ch across. Finish last st with B, drop A - 145 dc.
Row 2 (WS) With B, ch 2, turn. Dc in next dc and in each st to end, dc in top of beg-ch, drop B.
Row 3 (WS) Pick up A. Attach with slip st to top of beg-ch. Ch 2, dc in next dc and in each st to end, drop A.
Row 4 (RS) Pick up B. Attach with slip st to top of last dc on previous row. Ch 2, dc in next dc and in each st to end, dc in top of beg-ch, drop B.
Row 5 (RS) Pick up A. Attach with slip st to top of beg-ch. Ch 2, dc in next dc and in each st to end, drop A.

Rep Rows 2-5 twice more. Fasten off.

Field for Stars Turn stripes vertically. With C, work 22 dc evenly spaced across short end of scarf where color changes occur.

Row 1 Ch 2, turn, dc in next dc and in each st across.

Rep Row 1 until Field measures 12 inches from beg. Fasten off.

Sew Stars as desired.

STARS (make 8)
Ch 3, slip st to form ring.
Rnd 1 Ch 1, work 5 sc in ring, slip st to beg ch.
Rnd 2 Ch 1, work 3 sc in each sc, slip st to beg ch - 15 sc.
Rnd 3 *Sc in first sc, ch 5, slip st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in last ch, skip 2 sc; rep from * around, end with slip st to first sc. Fasten off.

HAT & SCARF, CHILD VERSION

HAT
Center of Crown
With larger hook and A, ch 4 and join in ring with a slip st.
Rnd 1 Ch 1, 6 sc in ring. Slip st to beg ch. (Mark for beg of rnd.)
Rnd 2 Ch 1, 2 sc in each of sc Rnd 1, slip st to beg ch - 12 sts.
Rnd 3 Join B with a slip st to top of beg ch, ch 1, 1 sc in same st, 2 sc in next st *1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; rep from *, slip st to top of beg-ch - 18 sts.
Continue in this way, alternating B for 2 rnds; A for 2 rnds, inc every 3rd st on next rnd, every 4th st on the following rnd, etc - inc 6 sts every rnd until there are 54 sts. Work even until crown measures 6 inches from center (4th B stripe, will be completed). Attach C with a slip st to beg next rnd and work even for 1 rnd.

Brim

Inc Rnd (1 sc in each of next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc) 8 times, 1 sc in each of last 2 sc - 62 sts. Work even until brim measures 2 inches. Change to smaller hook and work 1 rnd rev sc (from LEFT to RIGHT). Fasten off.

SCARF

NOTE

Scarf is worked in 2 sections.

Striped Section With A, ch 94.

Row 1 (RS) Dc into 3rd ch from hook and each ch across. Finish last st with B, drop A - 92 dc.
Row 2 (WS) With B, ch 2 turn. Dc in next dc and in each st to end, dc in top of beg-ch, drop B.
Row 3 (WS) Pick up A. Attach with slip st to top of beg-ch. Ch 2, dc in next dc and in each st to end, drop A.
Row 4 (RS) Pick up B. Attach with slip st to top of last dc on previous row. Ch 2, dc in next dc and in each st to end, dc in top of beg-ch. Drop B.
Row 5 (RS)
Pick up A. Attach with slip st to top of beg-ch. Ch 2, dc in next dc and in each st to end. Drop A.

Rep Rows 2, 3, 4 & 5 once more.

Fasten off.

Field for Stars Turn stripes vertically and work at short end where color changes occur. With C, work 14 dc evenly spaced across short end of scarf.
Row 1 Ch 2, turn, dc in next dc and in each st across.
Rep Row 1 until field measures 8 inches from beg. Fasten off.

Sew stars as desired.

STARS (make 7)
Work as for adult version.

I made this for my Grand daughter a few years ago, she loved it then and still does. I hated making the stars, but, they turned out really good. I have used this hat pattern in lots of other colors for her, added pom pom on top, really cute. Sandy Freeman
