Crochet Floral Block: Primrose Square

This generic pattern can be used with whatever yarn and hook/needle size you prefer.

Method of working: in the round

Special abbreviations
1 gp (2 linked sts together): yrh twice, insert as directed, [yrh, pull through 2 loops] twice, yrh, insert in lowest link of st just made, yrh, pull through link, yrh, pull through 2 loops, yrh, pull through rem 3 loops on hook
5-ch P (5-ch picot): 5 ch, ss in first of these 5 ch
7-ch P (7-ch picot):7 ch, ss in first of these 7 ch.

FIRST PRIMROSE

Using A, make a fingerwrap.
Round 1: Ss into wrap, 1 ch, 4 sc into wrap, ss in first ch. 5 sts.
Fasten off A. Join B to any sc.
Round 2: 3 ch, 1 dc in first of these ch, 1 ch, 1 gp in same sc, * 3 ch, [1 gp, 1 ch, 1 gp] in next sc, * rep from * to * 3 more times, 3 ch, ss in first dc of round.
Fasten off B. Join C to any 3-ch sp.
Round 3:1 ch, 2 sc in same ch sp, * 2 sc tog over [same 3-ch sp and next 1-ch sp], 5-ch P, 2 sc tog over [same 1-ch sp and next 3-ch sp], 4 sc in same 3-ch sp, * rep from * to * once more, 2 sc tog as set, 7-ch P, 2 sc tog as set, 4 sc in same 3-ch sp, rep from * to * twice more, ending 1 sc in first ch sp, ss in first ch of round. Fasten off C.

SECOND PRIMROSE
Work as first primrose, joining to first primrose on last round by linking the second 5-ch P and the 7-ch P to corresponding picots.

THIRD PRIMROSE
Work as first primrose, linking to second primrose as above.

FOURTH PRIMROSE
Work as first primrose without fastening off C, joining to first, second, and third primroses on last round by linking the second 5-ch P, the 7-ch P, and the next 5-ch P, forming a square. Do not fasten off. Rejoin C to last ss of round 3 of first primrose.

Round 4: Using C, 5 ch, * 1 dc in next sc, 3 ch, ss in 5-ch P, 3 ch, [1 tr, 3 ch, 1 tr] in st linking two 5-ch Ps, 3 ch, ss in next 5-ch P, 3 ch, 1 dc in 2nd of 4 sc, 2 ch, * rep from * to *, ending 3 ch, ss in 3rd of 5 ch.
Round 5: Ss into 2-ch sp, 5 ch, 2 dc in same ch sp, * 4 dc in each of next two 3-ch sps, 3 dc in 3-ch sp (between trs), 4 dc in each of next two 3-ch sps, [2 dc, 2 ch, 2 dc] in 2-ch sp at corner, * rep from * to * once more, ending 1 dc in first corner ch sp, ss in 3rd of 5 ch. 23 dc on each side.
Round 6: Ss into 2-ch sp, 3 ch, 1 sc in same ch sp, * 1 sc in each of 23 dc, [1 sc, 2 ch, 1 sc] in 2-ch sp at corner, * rep from * to * once more, ending 1 sc in first corner sp, ss in first of 3 ch. 25 sc on each side.
Fasten off C.
