4 Market Bags to Knit or Crochet

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Market bags make a perfect summer project. They work up fairly quickly, and are made in cotton and cotton blend yarns (great for summer because of their cool hand and easy care). Best of all, market bags can be used as soon as you’ve completed your project.

These four bags in knit and crochet have easy to read patterns and are excellent for summertime crafting.

Classic Market Bag With a thick, comfortable strap and a wide circular shape, this classic Market Bag is a great option for crocheters. This bag is ideal for trips to the market, or anywhere else you happen to find yourself this summer!
Green Living Tote This knitted Green Living Tote is an excellent option for knitters interested in working with a simple lace stitch. The base of the bag is made first and worked flat. Then, using a circular needle to pick up stitches, the body of the bag is worked in the round.
Al Fresco Market Tote Colorful stripes make the crocheted Al Fresco Market Tote fun and lively. This bag is a summer essential, and is perfect for everything from the market to the beach.
Eco-Friendly Expandable Shopping Bag The knitted Eco-Friendly Expandable Shopping Bag is surprisingly small when empty, but stretches to accommodate even very large shopping trips. Try making it in Recycled Cotton for a strong, washable bag in vibrant colors.

With even more patterns for market bags available here on our website, all  you have to do is pick out your favorite style and get to work.

  • I love making bags. They are quick and usually your pattern repeats to make it a good project while watching TV. Only problem is that they can hold a lot of stuff and get a bit heavy.

  • I love making market bags. They can be as plain or simple as you want, and you don’t have to worry if they come out a bit big or small. I’ve made several that I use myself, and have made many more that I’ve given away–they make great beach bags, too. The knit ones do  stretch a bit, and there’s a temptation for some clerks to overload them, so I tend to crochet market bags.

    • I am a fairly new knitter and can’t figure out how to “rotate work and pick up and k14 along adjacent short side of base” etc.  Since you have made this one, can you tell me how you did it?  I could really use the help!

      • Hi M Grentzer, the directions mean that you should turn your work so that the short side of the base is now facing up. Then you pick up stitches along that edge; see this FAQ from the Learning Center at LionBrand.com to learn now: http://cache.lionbrand.com/faq/246.html

Also, keep in mind that if you ever have pattern questions, you can e-mail support@lionbrand.com and one of our experts will help you along!

  • Ooh!  I haven’t made a market bag.  That first crocheted one have lots of good reviews.  I want to go buy some new yarn to make it!  However, I already have enought yarn to make 50 of these!  OK, many only 49!  😛

Wait.  I’m supposed to be working on the raglan mesh sweater ……Think I can do two projects at once?  Shoot!  Why not!  😀

    • Hey Jan, I have 4 projects going right now, lol … 3 crochet (including the current CAL) and learning to knit a scarf … so maybe I’ll have 5 projects.

  • I’m in the middle of the Market Bag pattern and loving it! I may use it for school books. 🙂

  • I’ve started mine, too!  It is fun!  I’m about in the middle.  I am using a G hook and I am crocheting pretty tightly.  I am using some yarn from my stash.

I am a school teacher and this is going to be great to take stuff to and from work!  Only problem?  All my second grade team mates are gonna want one ….. Darn!  That means I’ll have to go buy more yarn …. 😀

If it’s sturdy enough, I might make one for my weekend seminary trek, too!
